Memoirs of a Geisha

Current Mood:

Steve and I watched Memoirs of a Geisha on Christmas Eve. It was a fabulous movie. I haven't read the book, but Steve has, and he says that the movie was pretty much true to the book.

However, I *did* get to see a TV special that morning called The Secrets of Geisha. I was able to understand the origins and the evolution of the Geisha (pronounced GEY-sha, by the way--not GEE-sha), their role in Japanese society, and how the Geisha way of life fits (or doesn't fit, as the case may be) in the 21st century. It allowed me to enjoy the movie so much more :-).

It would be hard for me to say whose performance I liked best, because not having read the book, I can't separate the performance from the character. But I think Rob Marshall did a great job in getting Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang. Their dance background was a huge asset to their performance :-).

What a Christmas :-)!

Current Mood:

Christmas was wonderful :-)! Steve woke up at around 5:30am to go to the bathroom and I was waiting for him at the door. He took one look at me and said, "Noooo, it's too early honey, I'm still sleepy." I said, "Awww..." and pouted as I tucked him back into bed.

A few minutes later he walked out of the bedroom saying, "Ah, what the hell :-)." So we were up at 6am opening presents under the tree :-).

Now I can't say what we got because my dad has already scolded me about putting too much information online. But mom, dad, Judy, John--I just LOVE everything! Thank you so so very much :-)!

Steve then took a nap while I played with my gifts. He woke up in time for us to watch the Disneyland Christmas Parade. One day, we're going to Disneyland :-).

Then we spent the afternoon at mom and dad's for Christmas lunch :-). It was wonderful: a house with 8 grownups, 5 teenagers and 4 dogs :-). I loved the holiday chaos--people weaving around each other in the kitchen, teenagers picking on each other in good natured fun, conversations interspersed with laughter.

"We weren't CHASED by the escaped circus baboons in Okinawa--but they were coming up the hill TOWARDS us and when you're a kid, that's pretty scary stuff."

"You eat sour cream right out of the tub? What's wrong with you, child?"

"Oh oh oh get the fondue set! That'll be perfect with the chocolate for dessert!"

It was great :-).

I'll never make it...!

Current Mood:

Steve asked me not to wake him up until the crack of dawn before we open Christmas presents.

It's only 4:30. Sunrise is like, 2 hours away. I'll never make it...!

4 Day Weekend!

Current Mood:

WOO HOO I've got the next four days off :-)! I still have a floating holiday that I have to use up before the year ends or else I lose it. And since we get Monday off for Christmas, I decided to take the Friday before Christmas off as well so it all adds up to a nice 4 day weekend :-).

I've got updated pictures of our Christmas decorations :-)...

Here's our finished Christmas tree, all done in red and gold :-).

We thought it would be a funny idea to give Beethoven and Shakespeare Christmas hats :-).

Our finished mantel decorations :-).

One of Judy and John's gift to us is this really pretty Christmas Painted Pony. This one is called Reindeer Roundup :-).

Steve and I are looking forward to watching Memoirs of a Geisha :-). We already know we're probably going to end up having Japanese food afterwards :-).

Making Christmas Cookies

Current Mood:

Mom, dad, Abby and Margaret were over today to help me and Steve make Christmas cookies :-). Steve baked the cookies while Abby, Margaret and I frosted them :-). We had fun :-). The first cookies to be frosted were always the ones that had some morbid quality to it: a missing leg, a star with only four rays, things like that :-). We made headless angels, bloody people--Abby even made that 4-ray star into a headless Patrick from Spongebob Squarepants :-). Needless to say we used up a lot of red frosting :-).

What I enjoyed more than anything though was having family over at the apartment. I loved the sound of laughter that didn't belong to just me and Steve. I loved seeing the dogs curled up on the floor with Abby and Margaret. I loved how Jack kept begging dad for cookies. I loved how mom helped us make frosting.

I loved the huge stack of dishes that needed to be washed when it was all over. To me, it was the proof of an afternoon well-spent :-).

Christmas decorations so far

Current Mood:

Steve and I have been VERY lucky with Christmas decorations. Mom and Judy gave us some really neat things :-)

First of all, mom bought Steve and me this REALLY great bear Christmas decor :-):

It's so adorable! What we did is put it up next to the fireplace and decorate the tree part a little :-). Here's what that section of the apartment looks like now:

Yup, stockings for me, Steve, Katya and Jack :-).

Then, Judy sent us these gorgeous resin deer. We put them on the coffee table, so now the table looks like this:

Mom also let us have their tree--the big one :-). We're not done decorating yet (we're going for a red and gold theme this year), so we still have to get red and gold balls, but here's what it looks like so far:

I'll keep you updated :-)!

Well, I guess it had to happen...

Current Mood:

I went out to lunch with a couple of friends from work. You know how many fast food places have the menu over the counter and you look up to read it and tell them what you want?

I couldn't read it. They were all blurry. The only time the letters made any sense was when I would squint.

Yup, it looks like I'm going to be needing glasses. I haven't had my eyes checked yet, I'll do that next week. I'm still kind of hoping that it's just because of eye strain-- that my eyes are tired from looking at my laptop all day.

Yeah, I don't think so either.

Steve was really sweet about the whole thing. "Well, this could just be my opinion, but I think you'd make glasses look really good." I don't feel TOO bad about looking for glasses knowing that he's kind of excited to see me in them :-).

Today was SO cold...

Current Mood:

All together now... "How cold WAS it?" :-)

Today was so cold that when I went to work this morning, the driver's side door had been frozen shut.

Yup, last night's rain that had frozen the doors to the rest of the truck.

It was a good thing that I was able to open the *passenger's* side door. After that it was just a matter of crawling across the seat and shoving the driver's side door open :-).

Aaand we're back

Current Mood:

Hi everyone, I'm back :-).

Not that I really WENT anywhere, but last weekend I wasn't in much of a mood to blog. Steve and I had some...uh, discussions :-). But I'm excited about the results of that discussion so now I can blog again :-).

Steve already talked about how cold it is out there, so I don't need to discuss that :-). But MAN it's awful cold though. I haven't dressed this warmly since I went to Omaha at the beginning of the year.

Steve lit the fireplace last night. It was really nice having that extra warmth in the apartment. It also adds to the Christmasy feel :-).

Speaking of which, we should be decorating soon. We'll probably have the tree up by next week :-).
