End of May Lessons...

It wasn't until the end of yesterday's dance lessons that I realized that it was the last time the Sunday class would have Mr. Rukendorfer as the teacher. I was sad for a second until I remembered that we still have our Tuesday classes with him :-).
Next month will be Waltz and Rumba with Frank Holeman. I told myself that it's always a good thing to learn from different instructors. At the same time, I'm glad Steve and I will still be learning from Mr. Rukendorfer once a week :-).

Feeding my goldfish

I've discovered that watching goldfish feed is kind of relaxing :-). I thought I'd share the experience with you virtually :-). The fish food is to the left of the fish tank; click on it to pick it up :-).

Well isn't that nice!

It was an ordinary day and I was heading off to work when I saw two of our apartment complex's leasing agents standing near the exit. As I got closer I noticed they had a table set up with pastries and they also had a cooler. I rolled my window down.
"Hey, what's going on?" I asked, smiling.
One of them made a sweeping gesture towards the table. "Would you like some breakfast?"
Well isn't that nice! I asked for a bottle of orange juice, thanked them, and went on my way.
That certainly made my morning a little brighter :-). I made sure to call and thank them :-).

Hamster Races!

The pet store where Steve works had hamster races this past Saturday. What they do is they lay tracks and you're supposed to put your hamster in a ball so that when they run, the ball follows the tracks.
It was a lot of fun watching those hamsters go. In one race, the leading hamster (the one in the green ball) got right up to about an inch shy of the finishing line, then it decided to turn back and run the OTHER way :-).
Steve thought it would be funny to get a hamster's view of the race, because almost ALL races have at least one camera showing you what it looks like from the racer's point of view :-).
Prizes were given out. Mostly it was hamster food for the runner-ups, but the grand prize winner won a plastic Harley Davidson model, and where the motorcyle's tire was supposed to be there was a big hamster wheel :-).
There's probably going to be another hamster race in July, and I've heard talks about making the tracks fancier for that one :-). That should be fun to watch :-).

Mrs. Doolittle

I picked Steve up at the apartment to take him to work and he came down carrying a fishbowl. In the fishbowl was a little turtle that he found while walking the dogs. Actually he saved the turtle from a bird that was trying to figure out how to eat it. He wanted to take it to work to see if anyone knew what kind of turtle it was.
Now it's in its own little habitat right next to the aquarium where we've got 2 telescope goldfish and at least 10 guppies.
2 dogs... a nest of 4 birds in the balcony... at least 10 guppies... 2 goldfish... and now a turtle.

Japan Day

Today seems to be the day for Japanese culture :-).
I took Steve to work and when I was coming back, I decided to check the mail. A Japanese girl was walking to the mailboxes--she wanted to get today's newspaper from the coin-operated newspaper machine. She waved at me, and I waved back :-). I asked her how she was and she replied in Japanese first, then corrected herself and said in broken English, "I'm fine, thank you."
She put her coins in the machine as I was checking the mailbox. As I turned to leave, she opened the machine only to find that there weren't any newspapers left. She expressed her disappointment in Japanese. I wanted to say that I was sorry-- "Sumimasen"-- but I didn't know if it was the right word to use for the situation. Maybe someone who's reading this right now who knows Japanese can tell me if it is :-).
I told Steve about it when I got home and he told me that their first customer was a Japanese girl with a dog named Tetsu. I told Steve, "Well gosh, we're obligated to have Japanese food for dinner now :-)."
I found a kids' website that teaches simple phrases in Japanese. It's got audio and animation :-). It's at http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/index.html. I'm thinking I should learn a few Japanese phrases because the neighborhood we live in has several Japanese families. On more than one occasion, when I would be walking the dogs, I've run into people who have bowed to me. It'll be nice to be able to say "Hello" in Japanese as I bow back :-).Labels: Arts

Getting new goldfish

The dogs and I visited Steve yesterday at work :-). At one point, Steve and I walked to the fish tanks and I felt drawn to the telescope goldfish. I'd never liked them before--I thought they looked kind of freaky with their eyes so big like that.
I was watching a few of them swim around and suddenly realized why I find them likeable now.
They look like Stewie from Family Guy :-)!

When I realized it I knew I wanted a pair of them as pets :-). We'll be setting up the aquarium this weekend :-).

Dancing was fun :-)!

Steve and I had our first ballroom dancing lesson last night: 30 minutes of foxtrot and 30 minutes of American tango :-). We had a lot of fun :-). An hour may not sound like much, but believe me, I had trouble remembering what we learned at foxtrot after about 20 minutes of doing the tango :-).
What's awesome about the classes is that it's sponsored by USADance, which means you're taught by a professional instructor and you only have to pay $5 a person each session. Our teacher this month is Joseph Rukendorfer, who has received fellowship status for International Ballroom and licentiate status for International Latin. There is NO way Steve and I could afford to pay for a teacher like that on our own :-).
What's also great about attending classes that only cost $5 is that there is a simple atmosphere in the room: it was very casual and down-to-earth :-). And everyone was really nice, too--a few of the more experienced lady dancers (you could tell from their shoes and from how fit their calves were :-)) would come up to me and give me tips like, "Try not to lift your feet when you move backwards--slide your feet instead so it looks like you're gliding."

Mystery Science Theater 3000
Current Mood:
I just recently discovered Mystery Science Theater 3000 :-). We don't get that show in Manila, and that's a shame cause it's really funny :-). For my Filipino readers, the short description is that it's a tv series that started in the late '80s where one guy and 2 robots make fun of really bad movies as they're watching them :-).
Steve and I went and bought one of the DVD sets. I wouldn't be surprised if we bought more later :-). I watched like, 3 episodes in a row

Bird update

The other baby bird--the one in the box--didn't make it. It survived the night, but sometime during the day it managed to jump out of the box, off the patio table, and off the balcony. It managed to get quite a distance before I found where it ended up. I guess it was that determined to fly; that it was willing to die trying.
You gotta admire that kind of determination, though :-).
The good news is the other two baby birds are doing just fine with mama bird. The other eggs haven't hatched yet; I'll keep you posted :-).

...But if THAT'S the mama bird...

There was a knock at our door at around 7:30pm. It was one of the neighborhood kids.
"Excuse me..."
"Yes?" I said, smiling.
"On your balcony... you have a bird's nest..."
"Why yes we do," I said, wondering how she knew.
"A bird fell out of it."
"Oh my goodness!"
"We wanted to ask if we could put it back."
"Yes, yes, of course--where is it?"
"My mom has it."
A minute later the mom appeared holding what looked like a very sick bird. She placed it in my hand and I was surprised it was still alive. It hardly moved, it was so weak.
I thanked them of course, and brought the bird into the apartment. My first thoughts were, "Oh no--who's going to watch over the eggs? This bird must be worried about them."
So I went to the balcony and got the hanging basket so I could put the bird back in there.
"Oh no."
Two of the eggs have hatched! And the little chicks were looking up at me with their beaks wide open.
Sneak peek into my head at that exact moment: "I'm not a bird! How am I supposed to feed these babies? Eww they're ugly when they're young aren't they... oh man, how am I going to feed them? I don't regurgitate! Oh man, why did they have to hatch!"
It sounds dumb that I should panic, but that's exactly what I was doing. Then, another thought: "My husband works at a pet shop! He'll know what to do!"
He was just as clueless as I was. 
However I *did* notice, while I was talking to Steve on the phone, that another bird was fluttering around where the hanging basket was. I started to wonder: what if THAT'S the mama bird? I hung the basket back up and went inside to put the sick bird in a box. After I did that, I peeked outside. Another bird was in the nest. It looked and moved like the mama bird I knew.
A wave of relief washed over me. Oh thank goodness.
But if THAT'S the mama bird, who's the one in the box?
