Isn't that always the case?
Current Mood:
I love Nuevo Flamenco. I used to go to Flamenco classes here in Memphis (and I have yet to use up my remaining 6 classes--thank goodness my sessions don't expire), but I think the kind of Flamenco being taught is different from the kind that I'm used to in Manila.
My teacher in Manila (GinaJane Grey) takes a lot of her influence from her gypsy teachers, so when we do Flamenco it's really passionate and raw and emotional. Over here the flamenco is less so. Don't get me wrong, it's still pretty, but the high energy is what I love--and miss--most about it.
By the way, if you don't know what Flamenco dancing is, it's that Spanish dance where you have that big flowing skirt and you use castanets and noisy shoes :-).
Anyway, we just got a flyer in the mail from the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. They're doing a concert called Prism where they showcase music around the world: from Celtic fiddling and bagpipes to world drumming. There are even free pre-concert activities. One of the activities is--you guessed it--flamenco dancing. I would LOVE to see this concert.
The show is on January 23. I leave for Nebraska January 21.
