Now see, I NEVER would have thought of that :-)...

Current Mood:
CC is listening to: Smile Again--Manhattan Transfer (The Manhattan Transfer)

When I told Steve about how I couldn't get the doggies' scratch marks off the leather sofa and chair, I figured I would need to buy some sort of expensive leather restorer to get them back to normal.

The next day I come home from work and the scratch marks are gone.

"How in the world did you DO that?" I asked, sheer amazement on my face. "I tried the leather wipes but they didn't do a thing."

"Try sitting on it," he challenged, smiling.

So I sat on the sofa.

"Oh my GOSH!" I exclaimed. "It doesn't feel dry anymore! It's so supple! What did you DO?"

"Vaseline."

"Vaseline?"

"Yeah. You do it all the time with baseball gloves. Vaseline helps condition the leather. The scratch marks are sort of still there, Vaseline just helps you not see them as much."

Sheer genius :-). I'm going to have to look up all the other ways you can use Vaseline one of these days. I figure that's a product that doesn't get all the recognition it deserves :-).

The Proverbial Jackpot

Current Mood:
CC is listening to: Everything--Michael Buble (Call Me Irresponsible)

Ah, jetlag. Amazing how it just DRAINS you.

It hit me more strongly coming back than it did going over. I was up at 2am yesterday morning, forced myself to sleep from 4am-6am, and then at noon it hit me. You couldn't pay me to keep my eyes open. So I took a nap until 2pm and then I had to get up because Steve and I had to run an errand.

We came back an hour later and I was STILL dragging. Steve kept telling me to try and stay awake, because if I slept now I'd be awake all night and it'll make things worse. I tried, I really did, but I couldn't. So I fell asleep on the couch and finally at 5:30pm (yes, 5:30) Steve helped me to bed.

Woke up at 9pm, just like he predicted. I knew he had an early day tomorrow, so I thought I'd get up and spend some time with him since I spent most of my day sleeping.

I walk out into the living room and what do I see?

He's unpacked all my suitcases for me (and I brought two BIG ones back). He's taken out every article of clothing and laid them out nice and neat, categorized by type. He's grouped all the work stuff together and all the personal stuff together. The suitcases are gone: he put them back in the closet for me.

"Well, it was dinnertime but I wasn't hungry yet and I couldn't very well let you live out of a suitcase for the next few days." He knows me so well--I would've lived out of that suitcase until I used up all the clothes I took with me.

I'm looking at him in amazement, thinking, "I hit the jackpot with this man, I really did."

Hmmm...

Current Mood:
CC is listening to: Nothing right now

Lemme paint a picture for you. The apartment is quiet...I'm at the computer, concentrating on the task/s at hand... no other sound except for the soft hum of the ceiling fan and some birds chirping. It's almost zen-like.

Then, breaking the silence, Steve's voice at the other end of the apartment:

"Wat'cha gonna do with all that junk,
all that junk inside your trunk?
I'm a get-get-get-get you drunk,
Get you love-drunk off my hump..."

My husband, ladies and gentlemen :-).

Happiness is...

Current Mood:
CC is listening to: an episode of JAG on TV

Happiness is a big handwritten "I CC" on the bathroom mirror that was written when the mirror was dry, so you don't see it until after you step out of the shower :-).

Wow, I Didn't Know That...

Current Mood:
CC is listening to: Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 In G, BWV 1048: Allegro--Academy Of St. Martin-In-The-Fields (Bach: Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 3, 4 & 5)

Steve and I watched a show at the Germantown Performing Arts Theater last Sunday. We had great seats up at the balcony box. Unfortunately, I forgot my glasses at home and I'm nearsighted (or is it farsighted? I have a tough time focusing on things far away--I guess that's nearsighted).

I told Steve, "Well, if I squint I can see." He said, "Give me the swiss army knife on the keychain." {play MacGyver theme here :-)}

Then he took his ticket and punched two little pinholes on the opposite ends, making it look like a mask with pinholes instead of eyeholes.

He gave the ticket to me. "Try that."

And I'll be darned, it worked. Peeking through the pinholes naturally made my eyes focus tighter, making the faraway images clearer.

"I don't remember the scientific explanation," Steve said. "Probably has something to do with the rods and cones in your eyes."

The good news is once the lights dimmed I was able to focus on the stage on my own and didn't need the ticket. But it's nice to know that there's something I can use in a pinch that would substitute for glasses.

...well, except when I'm driving :-).

I Wish I Could Do That

Current Mood:
CC is listening to: Peer Gynt: Suite No. 1, Op. 46: IV. In The Hall Of The Mountain King (Alla Marcia E Molto Marcato) -- New Philharmonia Orchestra (Grieg: Peer Gynt Suites No. 1 & No. 2 / Norwegian Dance No. 2 / Homage March)

Before I met Steve, I thought I was a well-read person. Then I met Steve and now I'm embarrassed that I thought so highly of myself :-).

On his desk right now, next to this keyboard I'm typing on, is Herman Melville's Moby Dick. Not just any Moby Dick, mind you, it's the 150th Anniversary Edition.

I'm looking at it and it looks so... academic. I mean geez, the thing's 726 pages. And he reads stuff like this for *leisure.*

{opens the book to a random page}
"Am I a cannon-ball, Stubb," said Ahab, "that thou wouldst wad me that fashion? But go thy ways; I had forgot. Below to thy nightly grave; where such as ye sleep between shrouds, to use ye to the filling one at last.--Down, dog, and kennel!"
Huh?

Of course you realize I'm only saying this because I'm totally jealous :-).

I once told him that one of my favorite books was Alexandre Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo. I don't often read books more than once, but I read Count of Monte Cristo lots of times when I was younger. At one point I also enjoyed the movie Man in the Iron Mask, which was also written by Dumas.

And being the supportive husband that he is and wanting to share in my interests, Steve goes out and gets not only Count of Monte Cristo, but Dumas' entire Musketeers series: The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Valliere, and The Man in the Iron Mask. Each book is at least 600 pages, with a font size that's got to be less than 10.

He's read them all. Some more than once.

"Yeah, but you read Count of Monte Cristo," you say. "That's an achievement too."

Not when you find out what kind of book it was.

Yup, one of those children's books. It's 237 pages, but it's got pictures on every other page, which means the actual text only takes up 118 pages. The font size is about 18.

Like I said, it's embarrassing :-).

What a Guy...

Current Mood:

I mean seriously, how many husbands would be willing to stay in the bathroom with you and actually help you color your hair?

I had a haircut recently, and I thought it would be fun to color my hair and put highlights :-). There was only one problem: I'd never done it before, so I was a little nervous about it.

We used L'Oreal Couleur Experte, which is a kit that has 2 coloring sets in it: the first does the base color, and the second does the highlights.

Looking back, I wish I took a picture of it: me and Steve in the bathroom, I'm standing in front of the mirror and Steve is behind me, wearing the latex gloves and running the little mascara-like highlighting brush down strands of hair behind my head.

"You know, it's going to be really freaky if what I do turns out good," he said.

And it did. The strands he colored turned out more natural looking than the strands I colored. For him, that's a compliment. For me, that's just sad :-).

Overall though, it doesn't look bad :-). Next time we do this, we'll know how to make it more natural looking all over instead of in just certain spots :-)

Mrs. Doolittle

Current Mood:

I picked Steve up at the apartment to take him to work and he came down carrying a fishbowl. In the fishbowl was a little turtle that he found while walking the dogs. Actually he saved the turtle from a bird that was trying to figure out how to eat it. He wanted to take it to work to see if anyone knew what kind of turtle it was.

Now it's in its own little habitat right next to the aquarium where we've got 2 telescope goldfish and at least 10 guppies.

2 dogs... a nest of 4 birds in the balcony... at least 10 guppies... 2 goldfish... and now a turtle.

I married Dr. Doolittle :-).

It always amazes me...

Current Mood:

I sit at my husband's desk to blog when I notice something that looks like two college textbooks. I pick one up, it says "Three Kingdoms--A Historical Novel."

I read on. "Translated from the Chinese with Notes...the Iliad of China...Complete and Unabridged." It's got a bookmark after the first few pages. I flip through the book. The whole thing's like, font size 8.

First feeling: disbelief. He can wade through this stuff?

Next feeling: envy. *I* couldn't wade through this stuff. And he's going to read TWO of these?

Next feeling: pride and affection. My husband's SO freakin' cool :-).

Really proud

Current Mood:

I'm so proud of Steve. He's overcome one of his greatest anxieties of working outside the house.

He's now an assistant groomer at Petco--that means he helps with the bathing, blowdrying, and brushing of dogs :-). It may not sound like a glamorous job to the average person, but I'm really proud of him because the idea of working out of the house is something that has caused him much anxiety in the last few years.

And it works out really nice, too--he's so good with dogs and he's enjoying himself. On his second day at work, as we were walking to the truck together, he said that he wasn't feeling nervous--just hoping a little that he doesn't get to do too many BIG dogs today :-). I thought that was a great sign :-).

Another big plus is that his hearing difficulty is actually a benefit :-). Some of his co-workers have already said that they were envious that HE could turn off the noise whenever he wanted :-).

Of course the additional income is wonderful too, it couldn't have come at a better time--but I think the best part is that I look at him, and he's walking taller--prouder. It's the kind of walk that you see in someone who's overcome a major personal challenge :-).

A little Saturday jamming

Current Mood:

You know you're old when you get a chance to jam and you end up playing Beatles songs :-).

I was impressed with Steve's drumplaying :-). He and I did Eight Days A Week and he played the drums just like Ringo Starr did :-). It was also cool when he drummed out Wipeout and Simply Irresistible for me :-).

Naturally, since this was our first jamming session together, we were still sort of feeling each other out. Practicing more will help us get a better sense of each other's timing :-). Who knows, with enough practice, he and I might play a few songs well enough to actually resemble music :-).

That's my husband :-)...

Current Mood:

Yesterday morning I didn't have to be at work quite so early so I had a little extra time to snuggle. It was about 5:55 am and Steve was sleepily walking back from a bathroom trip. As I got into bed with him, he glanced at the digital clock.

"6 o'clock already? I was just in the middle of a dream..."

Two seconds of silence pass. Then I start laughing... . This is what Steve refers to as a "joke grenade."

Because of my crazy week, I'd also been having trouble with keeping track of the days. I asked, after I settled down a bit, "What is it today? Thursday? It feels like Wednesday."

"Well," he replied sleepily, "...I wish it was Sunday. 'Cause that's my fun day..."

How can he be so darned funny even when he's sleepy :-)?

He's so sweet

Current Mood:

Rent time always gets me a little depressed. I hate that "WOO HOO I'm rich--until I pay the rent" feeling.

I'd been pretty blah last night. Steve really went out of his way to make me feel better. The most touching part for me was that he shaved right before bed and put on cologne just in case I felt like snuggling during the night.

Now if you're a guy, that's probably a pretty pointless thing to do: shave before bed. By the time you wake up you've got the shadow on your face and would have to shave all over again. But just on the off-chance that I might want to snuggle during the night, he decided to shave.

And if that wasn't sweet enough, he did this after I'd already fallen asleep. I sort of vaguely remember his coming into bed and waking me up a little by rubbing his cheek against mine, letting me know that he'd shaved and put on my favorite cologne.

Then this morning he made me pancakes. Then he planned what we'd do today that didn't involve too much spending. We watched a movie, bought a couple of new shower caddies, then he worked out with me at the gym. I felt much better at the end of the day :-).

Aww... :-)

Current Mood:

Steve and the doggies fell asleep together this afternoon. They all looked so cute I had to take a few pictures :-).

The little green bear on the floor is Katya's. She would often carry that bear around like a little puppy :-).
