The next best thing to seeing the real Beatles

Current Mood:

Last night Steve and I went to see the Classical Mystery Tour. Imagine the Beatles performing with a live orchestra. What do you think it would have sounded like?

They were fan-freakingTASTIC, that's what it sounded like! We loved it! The rest of the audience did too. All of us--30 year olds, 40-, 50-, 60-... we were all on our feet at the end of the show screaming for more :-). We asked for three encores :-). My throat is hoarse from all that screaming :-).

Imagine Eleanor Rigby with a live string section. Penny Lane with a pure trumpet sound. The Classical Mystery Tour played the Beatles songs exactly as they were written, even doing all the background vocalizations like in Yellow Submarine ("Sky of blue..! Sea of green..! In our yellow..! Submarine..!")

First they came in their classic Beatles black suits, with the classic moptop hair. After two songs, they came out in Sgt. Pepper costumes with matching new wigs to sing songs from the Sgt. Pepper album! They went through two more costume changes during the show. The artist playing John Lennon even came out later with the white suit and longer-hair wig to sing "Imagine."

Until the end of the concert, they weren't calling each other by their real names. They referred to each other as "our drummer," "our lead guitar." They were talking to us in English accents until the very end even though the artists were from California, Tucson and New York. By doing all those things, they were able to keep the Beatles fantasy alive. You could just feel it: everyone treated them as if they were the real Beatles. Heck, someone in the audience screamed, "I love you Paul!" and another man later hollered, "You're the best, George!"

It was WONDERFUL. Steve and I had the BEST time. If you're a Beatles fan and the Classical Mystery Tour is performing in your area soon (you can find out at www.classicalmysterytour.com), go and see it. It's the closest thing you can get to seeing the original Beatles performing their hits and you get the added bonus and oomph of a full orchestra backing them up :-).
